About Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs is a beautiful, thriving community in northern New York State with a population of around 28,000. Steeped in history, it has been a popular resort area for the rich and famous for more than 150 years, and for untold centuries before that, Saratoga Springs was a sacred healing site for the native Iroquois. Saratoga Springs is widely known for it's natural mineral springs and famous mineral baths, for horse racing, for it's stunning Victorian mansions and architecture. Saratoga Springs is also an important cultural destination. Home to Skidmore College, a highly competitive liberal arts college of about 2,300 students, Saratoga Springs is
the cultural hub of upstate New York. And, by the way, the potato chip was invented in Saratoga Springs too.SaratogaNow has several sections devoted to giving exposure to local Saratoga Springs area artists and to the Saratoga arts scene in general. We are a portal site pulling together useful local information from scattered sources to save you time and keep you on top of what's happening in the community. We have links to many of the best local Saratoga Springs websites with information or links related to the arts, including the Saratoga County Chamber, the Saratoga Convention & Tourism Bureau, and the City of Saratoga Springs official site, and we will be adding more information and links all the time both in our database directory and on the pages. Saratoga Springs History

Photo of The Olde Bryan Inn

The Saratoga Springs area was the hunting ground of the Iroquois Indians, who called the place "Sarachtogue", "hillside of a great river," "place of the swift water." It has been proposed that the salty mineral waters attracted many animals and may have been one reason the hunting was good.

On October 17, 1777, the British Army was defeated in the final Battle of Saratoga when nearly 20,000 men surrounded General John Burgoyne and his exhausted army. Faced with such overwhelming numbers, Burgoyne surrendered. The surrender of a British and German army of 5,000 men at Saratoga has always been considered the turning point of the American Revolution. In fact, The Battles of Saratoga rank among the fifteen most decisive battles in world history. (ref) more...
