Saratoga Springs History
The Saratoga Springs area was the hunting ground of the Iroquois Indians, who called the place "Sarachtogue", "hillside of a great river," "place of the swift water." It has been proposed that the salty mineral waters attracted many animals and may have been one reason the hunting was good.
On October 17, 1777, the British Army was defeated in the final Battle of Saratoga when nearly 20,000 men surrounded General John Burgoyne and his exhausted army. Faced with such overwhelming numbers, Burgoyne surrendered. The surrender of a British and German army of 5,000 men at Saratoga has always been considered the turning point of the American Revolution. In fact, The Battles of Saratoga rank among the fifteen most decisive battles in world history. (ref)
