Kentucky Derby + Cinco de Mayo = A Great Day!

cincoderby.jpgThis Saturday, May 5, two annual events converge and create a perfect reason to get out and have a good time with friends and family. The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby goes off on Saturday at about 6:24pm, and will prove to be an exciting first leg of the Triple Crown. Every year on May 5, Americans rally to celebrate the heritage and pride of our Mexican neighbors, always a good time!

When two events like this occur on the same day, and that day happens to be a Saturday, there is sure to be some celebration. Saratoga Springs won't let you down; the calendar is full of events!

The Paddock Bar and Lounge will be having their Kentucky Derby Party from 4 - 8pm on Saturday. Head over and enjoy live music, great giveaways, and a few mint juleps! Ladies, wear your best derby hat, a prize will be awarded for most creative style!

Vapor Night Club opens at 2pm for Kentucky Derby Day, offering festival food and the only place you can watch the race on a big screen AND place a bet on your favorite!

The Annual Kentucky Derby Party to benefit the Retired Thoroughbred Racehorses of Old Friends at Cabin Creek is from 4 - 8pm at the National Museum of Racing. The party is catered by Longfellows, and will feature fancy hat & tie contests, 50/50 raffle, Kentucky Derby Simulcast on the jumbo screen and more! 

The Turf Club will have appetizers, drink specials and more for their Derby Party, from 4 - 8pm.

The Derby Party at Saratoga National will feature drink specials by Moët Champagne, Maker's Mark Bourbon and Sam Adams Brewery! There will also be live music, a 6.5 x 12 foot outdoor big screen to watch the race, and free Wi-Fi to place your bets!

Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride that is quite popular across this country. The day is usually met with margarita and tequila specials as well as popular Mexican food and novelty items.

Friday

Due Solsti: Kathleen Scheide, organist, and Zofie Vokálková, flutist.

The organ and flute ensemble, Due Solisti, will perform a diverse musical program at 7:30 p.m. at Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church,175 Fifth Ave., Saratoga Springs. The program will include a variety of short works, from Richter and J.S. Bach to contemporary composers. Admission is free. 584-3720.

Volcanoes exploding, flight simulators, reptiles and robots can all be explored in on spot at the SAGE/SHEN Science and Health Discovery Night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Gowana Middle School, Shenendehowa campus. This free event is open to Capital Region students, accompanied by an adult.

Saturday

Music 4 A Cause, a special concert to benefit the American Cancer Society, starts at 4 p.m. at Putnam Den, 63A Putnam St. in Saratoga Springs. For a $10 donation you can enjoy food, DJ and live music from The Late Shift, Stay Gold, Truth Be Told, Street Lights at Midnight and others.

Kids (and nostalgic adults) can jam along to “Unpack Your Adjectives” and “Do the Circulations” when the  Emmy Award-winning 1970s series, “Schoolhouse Rock!,” comes to life on stage at 8:30 p.m. (again at 3 p.m. Sunday) at St. Peter’s Parish Center, 64 Hamilton St., Saratoga Springs.

Downtown Saratoga is going to the dogs, literally, during the eighth annual Dog Days Pet Appreciate Week celebration. A variety of activities will take place at Impressions and Dawgdon. Click here for information.

See the people that build, restore and modify cars, trucks, and motorcycles at the Saratoga Nationals & Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds. Also Sunday.

Also, this is the last weekend of the U.S. National Park Service’s Free Entrance Day promotion as part of National Parks Week. This allows for free admission to Saratoga National Historical Park through Sunday.

World War II forum at Skidmore

Good Monday to you.

The Skidmore College Community Engagement course will offer another public community gathering. Junior Becca Gilligan recently emailed with the details. The forum features a panel of World War II veterans from the area. The members of the “Greatest Generation” will speak alongside Skidmore students starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Skidmore’s Gannett Auditorium. One veteran that will attend was a prisoner of war from Stalag Luft III, a German-operated POW camp in what is now Poland that was the basis of the movie “The Great Escape.”

“With over 1,000 World War II veterans dying each day, this opportunity is extremely rare and exciting,” Gilligan said.

‘Tax the 1%’ rally set for noon today

A “Tax the 1%” protest is set for noon today at Broadway and Lake Avenue (in front of the post office) in downtown Saratoga Springs, one of 255 planned gatherings being held across the nation on Tax Day.

Hosted by Douglas Klein and Sharon McFarlane and supported by MoveOn.org and The 99% Spring, the event commemorates the 99% paying their taxes and underscores how the wealthy 1% do not pay equal income taxes.
